The biggest listening, discussion & discernment event the Church has ever undertaken is happening now, across the globe. It is called Synod 2021-2023. Pope Francis is inviting all Catholics, all people of other faith traditions and people of goodwill to participate, pray, reflect and share thoughts and ideas.
The first part of the synodal process is to conduct prayerful discussion & listening sessions in every parish — in every diocese in the world.
We will hold a listening session for our Pastoral, Finance, and Stewardship Councils along with our parish pastoral and administrative staff. This will be conducted by our Synodal delegates Matthew Bradford, Sandra Lascari, Vivian Gil-Botero, and Jan Figenshu. The sessions will begin with Scripture and prayer, followed by an opportunity to reflect on and share responses to three questions:
The path of synodality is a wonderful opportunity for us to “journey together” as the People of God and to profoundly listen to the Holy Spirit and to each other in order to discern the path we are called to walk together.
“The synod is intended to inspire people to dream about the Church we are called to be, to make people’s hopes flourish, to stimulate trust, to bind up wounds, to weave new and deeper relationships, to learn from one another, to build bridges, to enlighten minds, warm hearts, and restore strength to our hands for our common mission.” (Synod Handbook)
The Synod on Synodality is a two-year process of listening and dialogue beginning with a solemn opening in Rome on October 9 and 10, 2021 with each individual diocese and church celebrating the following week on October 17. The synodal process will conclude in 2023.
Pope Francis invites the entire Church to reflect on a theme that is decisive for its life and mission: “It is precisely this path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.” This journey, which follows in the wake of the Church’s “renewal” proposed by the Second Vatican Council, is both a gift and a task: by journeying together and reflecting together on the journey that has been made, the Church will be able to learn through Her experience which processes can help Her to live communion, to achieve participation, to open Herself to mission.
